School sports have always been a staple of Camp Hill, both in terms of accolades and community appreciation. Covid-19, however, has raised questions and concerns regarding the safety of continuing school sports. Governor Tom Wolf made a strong recommendation to discontinue both school and non-school sports until January 1st when they’ll reevaluate the situation. Official statements from the PIAA and the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus offer different perspectives, and even open contradiction, with Jason Gottesman saying, “Gov. Wolf is completely off the rails.” Since Gov. Wolf’s statement was only a suggestion instead of a mandate and the PIAA permits for the continuation of sports, many schools, including Camp Hill, have decided to allow summer sports practices to continue.
Even with the school’s decision to maintain practices during this pandemic, there are still mandated precautions required before each practice takes place. For example, every student must have their temperature checked and written down, and are only allowed to remove masks after every student is officially checked. When one student was potentially exposed to the virus, the school required the team to have a 14-day postponement until the next practice. The near future of school sports at Camp Hill is still unsure, as officials wait to see how the virus and its effects change and develop.
